Le Prieuré a été construit en l’honneur de Saint Jacques le Majeur en 1156 par Geoffroy de Pontail, seigneur du Coudray dans la basse-cour de sa demeure. Ce couvent cloîtré pour des moines de l’ordre de Saint Augustin était rattaché à l’abbaye de la Réau, située dans l’évêché de Poitiers. Jusqu’à la Révolution, le prieuré s’est développé et a prospéré grâce à différents dons et legs. Le prieuré et le château sont le théâtre des conflits lors des guerres de Vendée, ils sont incendiés en septembre 1793. L’ensemble est ensuite vendu comme bien national en 1796. La chapelle accueillera le travail de Juliette Trébuchet

The Priory was built in honor of Saint James the Greater in 1156 by Geoffroy de Pontail, Lord of Coudray, in the bailey of his residence. This cloistered convent for monks of the Order of Saint Augustine was attached to the Abbey of La Réau, located in the bishopric of Poitiers. Until the Revolution, the priory grew and prospered thanks to various donations and bequests. The priory and the castle were the scene of conflict during the Wars of the Vendée, and were burned down in September 1793. They were sold as a whole in 1796 as national property. The chapel will host the work of Juliette Trébuchet
